My wife and I have been married about 4 years. She came into the marriage with 20k and during the marriage only brought in about $ /mo from SSI. She hasn't been able to work in a time, since before we started dating, due to disability (dipolar disorder / schizophrenia) and most likely won't ever be able to. I have been working consistently the entire time and to date have earned about k (before taxes) over the year period. We have a house but no, and we divide chores about. We decided to get a divorce after her third year of hospitalizations; we decided that she needs to be on her own two feet and I can't take care of her any more. We're planning to talk to a lawyer when she's out of the hospital, but I'm trying to get a preview of what to expect. From what I understand alimony is highly subjective but I haven't found good resources talking about alimony when one spouse is unable to earn any income. Is it likely that I'll owe her alimony? her lack of income make it easier or harder for her to request alimony? Part of my problem is that my income has gone steadily downhill as I've missed more and more time to handle her illness, and part of why I want out is so I can downgrade to a less stressful job at a lower income. I don't want to get stuck in this job.
