This does not make it less frustrating or less of an error. It is correct, and not particularly offensive, to say X culture has a tendency to do Y on the whole if there are facts to back that up. But if you automatiy assume that any given individual does that because they are part of that culture or, god forbid, ARGUE with them when they inform you that they do not, then that is both offensive and wrong. More to the point, however, if you are in a position of power over that person, it has the potential to do them harm. Did you deny them a job because they said they weren't lazy but you are just sure they are, since, you know, ALL French people are lazy? Did you just hire someone totally unqualified because there must be some technical aptitude in there somewhere (they ARE Asian, after all)? I agree with you, and this is why when someone makes this sort of incorrect assumption about me, it irritates me but I control that irritation and simply correct them politely. But if they then go on to insist that they know me better than I know myself because of a loose generalization that applies to other people, I not hesitate to give them a verbal beat down for being a disrespectful, bigoted fucking idiot. It's one thing to have wrong ideas we all do that, as you say, it's inescapable. It's something entirely to use them to shit on other people.
