During the down periods, it's important for me to practice "depression hygiene" maintenance to minimize the impact of the depression that happens. This includes enough rest but not too much (no more than one day a week allowed to wallow at home and do nothing) get outside every day, get up decently early in the morning and in bed by 10 pm, decent nurtrition, vitamin supplements, and some particular supplements that I find help for when I'm feeling stressed / down siberian ginsing root, rhodihola, lots of vit C, a good multivitamin daily. Therapy if I find the depression is not lifting after a few months. Seems like once every 10 years or so I really need a good head shrinking. My experience with anti-depressants have not been great. I'm also realizing how much of my depression is stress-related. It is not easy to create a low-stress life. We do not have a low-stress culture. Employers expect the maximum effort for the minimum pay. Lower stress jobs often don't pay enough to avoid financial stress. It is difficult to find a balance, and chronic imbalance has depression and burn-out effect for me.
